Intermediate Brake Course

Description

The Intermediate Brake course will be of three or four days duration. The courses will be designed for personnel engaged engineering involving brake systems. The course builds on the basic course to give a more detailed understanding of Railway Braking equipment of specific projects or group of projects. The course is for those personnel requiring a good general knowledge of brake systems or parts of systems and will include fault finding and data collection. The course will include testing the candidates at the conclusion of the course and may involve an oral or practical examination. Certificates will be issued. A pre-requisite for this course is that candidates will already have attended a basic brakes training course.

The following topics will be included.

1. Brake System Overview. A review of the overall system, its relationship with other sub systems and interfaces.

2. Air Supply and Treatment System.

a. A review of the basic course.

b. Detailed examination of the function of Air Supply equipment.

c. The routine and preventative maintenance of components.

d. Review of other components that are included in the air supply system and the interaction with other components.

3. Brake Control.

a. Type of brake control used.

b. Detailed examination of the major components

c. Examination of the interfaces

d. Types of signals used.

4. Other Sub Systems.

a. Air Suspension. Detailed examination of the components.

b. Wheel Slide Protection and Sanding. In depth study of the way in which WSP operates, the products that contribute to WSP and interfaces with other equipment.

c. Other systems. Parking Brakes, Warning Equipment, couplers, pantographs etc.

5. Actuators. Description, operation and function.

6. Installation and use of interrogation equipment

7. Basic fault finding.
