Description
The Advanced Brakes course will be of one or two days duration. The courses will be designed for personnel engaged in engineering involving brake systems. The course builds on the Intermediate course to give an advanced understanding of Railway Braking equipment of specific projects or group of projects. The course is for those personnel requiring an advanced knowledge of brake systems or parts of systems and will include fault finding and data collection. Emphasis will be placed on the use of diagnostics in identifying and correcting faults. Candidates should have a working knowledge of engineering techniques and principles. A pre-requisite for this course is that candidates will already have attended an intermediate level brakes course. The course will include testing the candidates at the conclusion of the course and may involve an oral or practical examination. Certificates will be issued.
The following topics will be included.
1. Brake System Overview. A review of the overall system, its relationship with other sub systems and interfaces.
2. Air Supply and Treatment System.
a. A review of the Intermediate course.
b. Detailed examination of the function of Air Supply equipment.
c. The routine and preventative maintenance of components.
3. Brake Control.
a. A review of the intermediate course content.
b. Project specific brake control system.
c. Detailed examination of the function of major components.
d. Reviewing the types of signals to identifying their use in diagnostics.
e. Preventative maintenance
4. Other Sub Systems.
a. A review of the intermediate course content.
b. Detailed examination of the components used.
c. Preventative maintenance
5. Advanced use of interrogation equipment. The use of this equipment in diagnostic activities
6. An opportunity, at the conclusion of the course, for candidates to discuss specific topics of interest.
